E 85 in a non flex fuel vehicle
I have a Toyota matrix non flex fuel vehicle with over 100,000. miles on it. I was told not to try E85 it will damage the vehicle. I went ahead and ran it with e85 for the last four months. my mileage dropped from 20 mpg to 18 mpg and my check engine light came on. the price per a mile of driving went down with E85 because it is about 30 cents cheaper than reg unleaded. The code that was set was a lean code. the only reason I quit using E85 is because with no mods starting the eng at temps under 35 deg F took about 3 to 4 try’s. I am know getting ready to buy signal modifier that will allow me to adjust the injectors to run properly with the less volatile fuel E85 since the octane is around 100 and reg unleaded is 85 to 87. We will be writing an article on this test with more details on the magazine when the tests are finished. please post any info you may have on this subject.
